The Chalet is a beautiful red wooden Norwegian chalet style house in Symonds Yat in the Wye Valley in Herefordshire. The house was originally built as a show home for an exhibition in White City, London in 1912. A wealthy Londoner, who enjoyed fishing, had the house dismantled and rebuilt by the river Wye so that he could fish for salmon there. It is better known as the location of Otis’s house in Sex Education, the hit Netflix series of 2019, which is now back for a third series.

The background wallpaper icon in my screen print is inspired by the paperweight on Jean’s desk, from an image kindly supplied by the director. It is a fertility totem comprised of two prongs, a pair of breasts and a mermaid’s tail. This print was a commission from the director and he bought the first ten prints, one of which was given to Asa Butterfield as a gift.

Sex Education is a celebrated modern sex comedy, a teen series that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but one which gives valuable opportunities for discussions about sex, relationships and intimacy in the #MeToo generation. It is set in the UK but with an American high school feel which makes school seem that bit more glamorous.

The Chalet is where Otis (Asa Butterfield) lives with his mother, Jean (Gillian Anderson). Jean is a sex therapist and single parent to Otis, discussing sex openly with him to a point where he is cringing with embarrassment as she oversteps the usual parental boundaries. This extraordinary relationship at the heart of the drama leads to Otis becoming a sex therapist to his classmates and trying to solve their sexual and relationship problems.
