The Crown Tavern in Clerkenwell Green, built in 1607, has an interesting history, rumour has it that it was where Lenin first met Stalin in 1903. It was once the well-known Apollo concert hall and Judi Dench was filmed inside on location for the ‘Notes on a Scandal’ film. Now it is a delightful pub serving specialty beers and great food, with a useful al fresco seating area.

Apparently, Joseph Stalin had escaped from hard labour in Siberia, where he had been sent for raising funds for the Bolsheviks. He was in London, as he had moved the publication of the Russian Socialist newspaper Iskra to Clerkenwell Green. He lived nearby in Percy Circus and met Vladimir Ilyich Lenin at what was then the Crown and Anchor pub, when Lenin came to London to train as a Bolshevik. Clerkenwell Green was the venue for Communist party meetings.
