The Champion pub in Fitzrovia was built in the 1860s, as shown by the curved corner to the upper floors. This was a key feature of many 19th century London pubs as the name was written down the side and could be seen from a distance on crowded streets.
In 1989, Ann Sotheran, a well-known York-based stained glass artist, added some beautiful windows featuring a series of 19th century “champions”, with figures such as Florence Nightingale and the well-known cricketer W.G. Grace.
It is now a friendly local pub just North of Oxford Street, popular with office worker sand tourists alike. You must go inside to fully appreciate the windows and enjoy the warm hospitality.
I've used a drawing of a Champion cup to create the sky background.
