The Mayflower ship was chartered by the Pilgrim Fathers and set sale in 1620 for America. The ship sailed from Rotherhithe to Plymouth to pick up the pilgrims.
Rotherhithe was convenient as the Thames was deep enough here for large ships to progress into the North Sea. According to popular myth Captain Jones tied the Mayflower by the pub to avoid paying mooring taxes. It took more than two months to make the journey, landing in Cape Cod. Apparently, you can buy both American and English stamps in this charming pub.
