The Holly Bush is a Grade II listed pub in Holly Mount, Hampstead. The building was built in the 1790s as a home and is said to occupy the site of the stables of artist George Romney’s house. Romney is best known for his portraits of Emma, later Lady Hamilton, famously the mistress of Admiral Lord Nelson. Emma was an ambitious girl and courtesan who became an artist’s model, Romney painted over 60 portraits of her in classical semi naked poses such as Titania, Greek goddesses. She married Lord Hamilton in 1971 at the age of 26 and gained some respectability and was received at court in Naples, she became the mistress of Nelson and bore him a daughter.
Famous customers of the Holly Bush pub have included writer and dictionary creator, Dr. Samuel Johnson and his biographer and fellow drinker James Boswell; actor Jude Law, and musician Liam Gallagher who was thrown out one evening after an argument over whether he’d paid for his drink.
It is now a great pub serving traditional pub food and real ale with a very useful outside area to enjoy the sunshine.
